Label to help motorists choose used cars
Written by admin on November 3, 2009 – 9:10 am Car costs made clearer by fuel economy labels. The government has launched a used car fuel economy label to help motorists understand the running costs of a car before they buy.
Participating dealers will use the labels to provide information about the car, such as its CO2 emissions, how many miles to the gallon it can achieve and the estimated cost of fuel over 12,000 miles.
New car fuel economy labels are already in use, helping drivers to weigh up daily running costs as well as other expenditure like car breakdown cover and insurance.
“Running costs and environmental performance are increasingly important to new and used car buyers,” said transport minister Sadiq Khan.
He added that the labels “will give people the information they need to make the right purchase for themselves and the smart purchase for the environment”.
The labels have been developed by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership and are backed by the Retail Motor Industry Federation and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
According to an AA survey conducted in September, 91% of people supported the introduction of fuel economy labels to make the cost of running a car easier to understand.
